Millionaires’
yachts tie up for an evening out at Port El Kantaoui. Here, the
jet set mingles with holidaymakers who arrive in style by horse-drawn
calèches from the beachfront hotels. Harbourside cafés
dispense outsize ice creams, the aroma of fresh grilled seafood
from the restaurants is irresistible, and when the sky darkens,
the lights twinkle, the shops stay open late and the world and his
wife pack the waterfront.
From the old port of Sousse, the Phoenicians
and the Aghlabid rulers set sail and later the French and Spanish
landed. All left a lasting impression on Sousse. The Great Mosque,
the 9th-century Ribat fortress, the souks and the Kasbah, with its
museum full of wonderful mosaics, are the historical core. But in
the modern city that spreads beyond the hub of Place Farhat Hached,
there are lively cafés, shops, restaurants, bars and even
a casino. And whether you try seafood at Le Lido, delicious Tunisian
mezze at La Marmite or opt for French cuisine at l’Escargot,
you’ll eat well in Sousse.
Port el Kantaoui’s PGA-approved golf
club serves both resorts as well as hosting international tournaments.
There are two 18-hole courses. Tennis (sometimes floodlit after
dark) and horse-riding are available too if you feel really energetic.
The great thing about staying at Port El
Kantaoui or Sousse is that you can enjoy the best of two resorts.
